Horry County School leaders move forward with new Socastee Middle School plans

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County School Board announced plans to choose a new plot of land for the Socastee Middle School.

Crews will still build Socastee Middle, just not where we thought. Chairman Joe Defeo says they've always had back-up options, which is why he says the project shouldn't be delayed. During Monday night's meeting, board members voted to start looking for another plot of land. This comes after learning the plot previously chosen, off of Socastee Boulevard, has taken on too much water. However, Chairman Joe Defeo, still plans to have shovels in the ground this year.

"If we are able to get the land, [construction will begin] probably two or three months from now," Defeo said.

Defeo believes the new middle school is still a reality, because they've been talking with other options for the past year now.

"For the new middle school, we have been discussing a potential purchase with a local company, and we also have three areas of land that we are looking at," Defeo explained.

Defeo couldn't give exact locations just yet, but says the RFP, the request for proposal, has already hit the internet, and it's posted on their website.

"We're just asking for bids from all of them and then the selection committee does it's job, when they make their selections, they bring their recommendations to the full board," Defeo said.

In six weeks, Defeo plans to have a contractor in place, and from there all five new schools will be on their way to construction, if everything goes to plan.

"I don't see a delay in the building program, now if the land purchase delays by two months, then yes, there would be a delay in the starting of that particular school," Defeo explained.

While Defeo doesn't expect much of a delay, he says Socastee Middle could handle one, since it is in better shape than others on the list. He says this land purchase could end up costing more or less than the plot of land they just gave up, but they would rather be safe than sorry. If they decide on a plot of land, there will be a special meeting, within the the coming weeks.
