Coast guard crews patrolling "Operation Dry Water"

CHARLESTON, SC (WMBF) -   Coast Guard crews and members of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and North Charleston Police Department, will be patrolling Charleston throughout the weekend of June 26-28 in support of Operation Dry Water.

Operation Dry Water is an annual campaign taking place throughout the United States and it's territories; the purpose is to bring a significant reduction to the number of alcohol and drug-related accidents, injuries, and deaths among recreational boaters through education, detection and enforcement.

Command duty officer Lt. Jeffrey Prebeck, stated, “Our primary concern at all times is safety. We advise boaters to operate their vessels with caution.”

The Coast Guard reported that alcohol was the cause of 277 boating accidents nationwide over the last year. This included 108 deaths and 247 injuries.

Coast Guardsmen from Station Georgetown will also be on patrol throughout the area. In addition, Coast Guardsmen in Georgia and Florida will be participating in the operation, patrolling throughout their respective states.
