Thousands line up to attend funeral for Sen. Pinckney

CHARLESTON, SC (WMBF) - Thousands of people from across the region began to get in line before the sun even rose to attend the funeral of Sen. Clementa Pinckney, one of the nine victims of the shooting last week at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

“This has been a very tragic period in our city, and we're very honored that President Obama is coming to do the eulogy this morning, but also to offer support to our city,” said Johns Island resident Lyn Harrison, who has been in line since midnight. “So we just felt we should be here to support everyone as well.”

Watch a live stream of the funeral, with coverage beginning at 10 a.m. on WMBFNews.com.

“I really didn't expect this many people, especially so early” said Columbia resident Madeline Warrington.

The funeral will take place at the TD Arena at 301 Meeting Street on the College of Charleston Campus at 11 a.m. Friday. President Obama is scheduled to deliver a eulogy, and the burial will take place at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Marion.

“With the situation that happened here more than a week ago, I felt an obligation as a Christian to come to show our support for our brother and our sister who have been murdered,” said Melvin Riddick, from Huntersville, North Carolina. “A show of solidarity and a commitment to Christ as a Christian, one to another.”
