ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Bowman man has been formally charged with murder after witnesses say he gunned down a man.

Deonte Pelzer, 22, of Bowman Branch Highway, made his first court appearance Wednesday, where Orangeburg County Magistrate Peggy Doremus presented his legal rights.

Pelzer was taken into custody Tuesday by St. George officers who were patrolling an apartment complex. Officers told Orangeburg County investigators they stopped after smelling what they thought was marijuana.

St. George officers questioned a man identified as Pelzer; the officers then discovered he was being sought in Orangeburg County on a murder charge.

Witnesses told investigators that 29-year-old Kendall Thomas walked up to a gray Honda Accord approaching the Aaron Street location just after 8 p.m. Monday; Thomas then leaned into the car and the driver shot a single round that struck Thomas in the abdomen.

Friends rushed Kendall to the Regional Medical Center Monday night where he later died.

According to Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, no other suspects are being sought in this case.

Investigation is still ongoing at this time.
