FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A 26-year-old Florence man has been arrested after police say they found a small puppy locked inside a hot car for over three hours, with the windows rolled down an inch.

On Saturday, June 20, mall security called Florence Police and reported an animal in a hot car, according to Major Carlos Raines. Officers found a small gray puppy inside the vehicle. The dog was shaking and panting heavily.

Officers say the car's windows were rolled down an inch. An officer unlocked and opened the door, and got the puppy out. Major Raines says the dog was locked in the car for three and a half hours.

Ricky Lamar Hughes was charged with animal cruelty, along with resisting arrest and possession of drugs. Hughes was also served a bench warrant.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Hughes remains incarcerated at the Florence County Detention Center.
