MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - South Carolina Rep. Alan D. Clemmons reacted Thursday to the death of Senator Clementa C. Pinckney who was one of nine victims killed in the deadly shooting Wednesday night in a church in downtown Charleston, SC.

“I've had the chance over the last 13 years, to work with Senator Pinckney, and his loss shakes me and I'm confused and angered and upset that we've lost a true son of South Carolina,” Rep. Clemmons said. “If you knew the man, Clementa Pinckney, you would know he was a kind, gentle, soft-spoken, loving man.”

Senator Pinckney, 41, was the pastor of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and represented South Carolina District 45 of Allendale, Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton, Hampton & Jasper Counties, according to the SC State House Website.

Sen. Pinckney is survived by his wife and two children.

Rep. Clemmons called the shooting tragedy “a crazy, barbaric act and that has shaken this state, and it has shaken this country to its core.”

Rep. Clemmons recalled bonding and becoming friends with Senator Pinckney when they first worked alongside each other in trying to establish a controversial Savannah River-based deep water port for Jasper County.

Rep. Clemmons represents Horry County (District 107) and is the Chairman of the House Rules Committee.

He plans to travel to Charleston to assist during this sad time of loss.
