Florence officials conduct checkpoint

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Florence officials held a checkpoint Friday. A total of 24 violations occurred from 8 p.m. to midnight during the 12th Circuit Law Enforcement Network's traffic safety checkpoint on Old Marion Highway near Jamestown Road and Deepwood Lane in Florence County, according to the Florence County Sheriff's Office.

The news release from the FCSO states that close to 1071 vehicles were encountered, one arrest was made and the following violations were witnessed during the checkpoint:

                Open Container:                               2

                Driver's License Violation:             10

                Driving Under Suspension:           4

                Turning Unlawfully:                       1

                Possession of Marijuana:             6

                Possession of Oxycontin:              1

The LEN is supported by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and their goal is to prevent motor vehicle accidents from occurring by spotting violations and drivers under the influence during the checkpoints, says the FCSO.

The 12th Circuit LEN includes all law enforcement agencies in Florence and Marion Counties, plus the 12th Circuit Solicitor's Office, SC Highway Patrol and State Constables.

For four consecutive years, the FCSO has been the host agency for LEN activities in the 12th circuit.

    One person has died after an accident on U.S. 17 South early Saturday morning. According to Jed Jones with South Carolina Highway Patrol, a pick-up truck was traveling on U.S. 17, when it ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned around 1:55 Saturday morning. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

     A house fire has temporarily shut down Myrtle Avenue in Pawley’s Island. Pawley’s Island Police confirm a house fire at 350 Myrtle Avenue, and say the road will be closed for a while. There is a house fire at 350 Myrtle Ave. Street will be closed for a while between the causeways.

    Conway Pastor Phillip Miles was arrested Thursday by TSA for carrying an unloaded pistol into Myrtle Beach International Airport. According to J. Reuben Long Detention Center’s website, Miles was charged with carrying weapons into restricted places and was released on $500.00 bond.
