Non-profit converting shipping containers into homes for homeless veterans

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Local homeless veterans will soon have a place to stay. A nonprofit group in South Carolina is turning shipping containers into homes.

The Veterans Housing Development Corporation converted its first container into a one-bedroom house.

The container will be on display June 13-14 at the Legends Golf course during a tournament for veterans.

The steel containers measure eight feet wide and 40 feet long.

“It's a safe and secure environment with a gated community. With several of these units around in a horseshoe around a common area,” said Brad Jordan, president of Veterans Housing Development Corporation.

There will be an event to raise money for the homes. The first event is scheduled Tuesday, June 16 at Gordon Biersch in Market Common. The event lasts from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
