LAKE CITY, SC (WMBF) – The 8-year-old girl who successfully lobbied the State of South Carolina to get the Columbian mammoth named the official state fossil will be recognized in her home town next month.

On July 2, Olivia McConnell will be holding a signing for “Can You Dig It,” a children's book she wrote that recounts her unique experiences at the State House, according to Greg Moore with the Lake City Chamber of Commerce. The County of Florence will also issue an official proclamation in her honor.

The book signing will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Inn at the Crossroads in Lake City, Moore said.

McConnell made national headlines when state senators attempted to tack on creationist language to her bill declaring the mammoth the state fossil. Both amendments to the bill were eventually tossed, and Governor Nikki Haley signed the bill into law in May 2014.
