Murrells Inlet community offers survey to improve tourism, environment, growth

MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - If you live, work, or play in Murrells Inlet, it's now time to have your voice heard. Murrells Inlet 2020, wants to hear what you want done, to make it a better place.

The community organization is looking for you to answer a survey of two dozen questions. The goal is to find out how they can better serve the community, because that's what Murrells Inlet 2020 seeks out to do.

The survey responses will help Murrells Inlet 2020, come up with a five year strategic plan. The survey, and the plan, is all based on three parts: The environmental impact on the inlet, tourism, and the redevelopment of the commercial districts. These are all part of the Murells Inlet 2020 mission.

These surveys will help area leaders know where you specifically want them to focus and what more can be done in the area. For example, organizers say one topic constantly brought up, is the mall.

Once these survey responses are collected, a board will analyze data to drill down a more concrete plan.

“And figure out what are things we could actually accomplish that the majority are wanting us to do," said Murrells Inlet 2020 Executive Director Renee Williamson. “It's going to take time, it's not just going to be one meeting. It's going to take months and months of meeting to do this but a good strategic plan takes time."

Since releasing the survey Murrells Inlet 2020 has already received about 200 responses. You have until June 30 to complete the survey.

That's not the only new effort by Murrells Inlet 2020. The “Inlet-Friendly Business Program” is officially launched. It's to get businesses focused on doing their part to keep the Inlet, environmentally friendly. The idea is, if we each do our part now, the inlet will last long term.

Murrells Inlet 2020 is offering out this Inlet Friendly Program - starting with businesses - for free. It keeps them in check by having them train employees on working environmentally friendly, check off action items, and document their efforts.. Since this program launched, about a month ago, about a dozen businesses have picked up applications, and about three have signed up, but the goal is to get everyone on board.

In turn, the organization will recognize each business for their commitment and participation.

“What we want to do is we want to help the businesses understand how the little every day things they do with their business can impact the inlet in a good way or in a bad way,” said Williamson.

Your involvement is next. In the next six months Murrells Inlet 2020 plans to launch the Inlet Friendly Resident Program, and then one for tourists, so one way or another, we all get involved.
