SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) - The Scotland County School Board voted June 8 to close Pate-Gardner Elementary School, Washington Park Elementary School and Sycamore Lane Middle School for the 2015-2016 school year due to operating under capacity and dwindling daily attendance, according to Meredith Bounds, Scotland County Schools Public Information Officer.

Washington Park and Pate-Gardner Schools will consolidate and move into the Sycamore Lane Building and the students who attend Sycamore Lane will be switched to go to Carver Middle School or Spring Hill Middle School, says Bounds.

The plan, which hopes to focus on putting money back into the classrooms for the students, is through attrition so the schools will not have to cut teachers during the 2015-2016 school year, Bounds states.

Last fall, the district looked into the capacity of the buildings and found that none were operating at over a 65% capacity.

The vacant properties may be shopped out to other entities in the area to be purchased, according to the Board.

The community is invited to Washington Park at 2 p.m. and Pate-Gardner at 4 p.m. on Sunday June, 14 for a farewell to the buildings.
