Horry County discusses 2 possible public shooting range sites

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Five sites have been considered for gun ranges in Horry County. Of the five, two sites are still being discussed as a possible location for a gun range if the full council would like to get into the gun range business, said Lisa Bourcier, Horry County public information officer.

Site 1 is located near the Solid Waste Authority Material Recycling Facility. The property is owned by SWA and would cost nearly $2 million to improve the site. Improvement cost includes engineering and 20 percent contingency. The higher number is for a paved access road, as noted by the county.

The site has 1187 acres that could allow for development beyond a pistol and rifle range. The county says this site could easily accommodate a sporting clays course among other shooting activities.

Currently, SWA 1187 is a storm debris site. It has potential for other uses, as the need arises. The closest residential area is three-quarters of a mile.

The site will need to be raised two feet for draining purposes.

_____________

Site 4, also being considered, is located on John Doctor Road and is owned by the City of

Conway.

The site costs $1.75 million to $1.79 million, which includes engineering and 20 percent contingency. Also, the higher number is for a paved access road, as noted by the county.

The site is currently used as a shooting range for public safety officers.

The closest residential area is one-quarter of a mile.

The site has 30 acres and is limited to a pistol and rifle range, according to the county.

The next steps will include Horry County staff contacting the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to proceed with the grant process.

Once the County gives approval to a site and applies for the funding, the following would have to take place before the site could be funded.

a. An environmental assessment.

b. Endangered species study.

c. Shippo Study.

d. Noise Study.

e. Gather comments from the community and the economic impact to the area.
