FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Someone is making fraudulent calls claiming to be a representative with the Florence County Sheriff's Office, and the FCSO wants to warn citizens that this is fake.

According to law enforcement officials, the caller tells victims that the sheriff's office has a warrant for their arrest, and the only way to avoid an arrest is to transfer money, provide credit card or other personal information. The caller states the warrant is for failure to appear for jury service. Officials say the caller may leave a voice message with a callback number which is answered as “Florence County Sheriff's Office, Warrant Division.” The caller may also pose as an Internal Revenue Agent suggesting you owe back taxes.

FCSO officials say it is unlikely they will call individuals if there is a warrant for their arrest, and warrants can't be fixed with a credit card or gift card. The sheriff's office will never demand money from anyone in order to avoid arrest.

An investigation indicated that it is unlikely the callers are in SC, and could possibly be out of the country, officials say. “The likelihood of identifying and apprehending these crooks is "zero," according to a press release from FCSO.

Officials urge citizens to hang up the phone if they receive a fraudulent call.
