Horry County assistant solicitor speaks candidly about proposal to cut employee benefits

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Assistant Solicitor George Debusk addressed Horry County council members at a meeting Tuesday. Debusk spoke candidly about the county proposal to cut employee benefits.

Debusk claimed the population of Horry County has increased 15 percent in six years.

“When the population increases, the workload [of county employees] increases,” said Debusk.

He said the 300,000th resident entered Horry County in 2014 and attributed the growing population to more crimes being investigated by the Horry County Police Department; more warrants being prosecuted by the solicitor's office; more inmates being booked at the county jail, and more taxes being processed by the county's assessor office.

Debusk equated the growth to more work for everyone on the county payroll.

“That's why employees feel betrayed,” said Debusk.

Debusk suggested council increase the hospitality fee. He said those fees would pay for increased security at Bikefest and the upcoming country music festival and other “tourist-related events.”

“If the tourists leave, we all lose,” Debusk added.
