CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen has awarded a grant to the Conway Medical Center (CMC) Foundation for “Partnership in the Pee Dee” to highlight breast cancer education, outreach, screening and diagnosis throughout the Pee Dee region.

“This grant will allow us to educate and reach a broader range of individuals that need to be screened,” says Amy Thorn, Certified Breast Health Patient Navigator for CMC's Center for Breast Health.

The South Carolina Witness Project (SCWP), who is partnering with the grant, will target female breast cancer survivors in African American churches in Horry and Marion Counties to instruct them to become witnesses, educate about breast cancer, increase mammogram screening participation and to tell their story, according to a news release from CMC Foundation. Mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies will also be provided if needed.

“Our partnership with the South Carolina Witness Project will allow more people in our community to be taught about the benefits of being screened and CMC can provide screenings to these patients. In turn, we will be able to detect any breast cancers early and ensure quality care,” added Thorn.

According to CMC, the CMC Mammography Initiative offers mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women and men and since 2005, over 1,500 women have been helped.

The Komen Lowcountry Affiliate has devoted over $6.5 million in community breast cancer programs in the coastal and Pee Dee areas through events such as the Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure.
