Horry County EMD adds more hurricane evacuation shelters

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - The official start of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane season is days away.

Governor Nikki Haley, and other state officials gathered Friday at the annual Hurricane Preparedness briefing to discuss preparation plans and changes to how they're going to keep you safe.

Horry County Emergency Management officials said they've been working diligently through the off-season to make a big announcement at the meeting.

Officials are adding more hurricane evacuation shelters across the county so that more families have a safe place in the middle of a hurricane-10 more shelters to be exact.

The lack of shelters became a serious problem a few years back. The county took some buildings off its original shelter list because they were in storm surge areas. The shelters left on that list could only hold up to 5,000 people. Now, that capacity is tripled up to almost 14,000.

Governor Nikki Haley also talked about life after a hurricane. She stressed a focus on the economy after the evacuation and the storm because then it's about picking life up again, and going back to work.

Her message to businesses: it's your turn to prepare.

"Do you have coverage?" Gov. Haley asked. "Do you know where that paperwork is? Do your employees know how you're going to contact them should there be an emergency? How will they know when to come back to work? What numbers do you have? Are they updated? These are all questions that every business needs to be asking."

One other thing stressed over and over - just because the hurricane season is forecasted to be below average, your family still needs to take time to make sure you're prepared.

    One person has died after an accident on U.S. 17 South early Saturday morning. According to Jed Jones with South Carolina Highway Patrol, a pick-up truck was traveling on U.S. 17, when it ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned around 1:55 Saturday morning. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

     A house fire has temporarily shut down Myrtle Avenue in Pawley’s Island. Pawley’s Island Police confirm a house fire at 350 Myrtle Avenue, and say the road will be closed for a while. There is a house fire at 350 Myrtle Ave. Street will be closed for a while between the causeways.
