Officials detonate ordnance at old air force base

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Multiple agencies were called to the old air force base to detonate an ordnance Friday, said Lt. Crosby with the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

The ordnance is too unstable to move, said Crosby.

An excavating company found the military ammunition.

Officials detonated the bomb Friday evening. Crosby said civilians wouldn't be affected by the detonation.

“I think they were being just cautious, but no I don't think anyone here is overly concerned,” said Paul Crosby, who lives just down the street.

“I'm sure people are wondering what it was, but once you came out and saw, it was nothing to worry about,” explained Bev Levingston, another neighbor in the area.

Agencies including the Horry County bomb squad, HCFR, SLED and the Air Force from Charleston were on scene. Air Force eod from charleston to assist.

The construction company says it plans to scan the entire site next week to check for other ordnances.
