Carolina Country Music Festival to charge $50 per person to park

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Event organizers for the Carolina Country Music Festival announced parking details for the three-day festival on Thursday, and several concert-goers were appalled by the $50 per person parking fee.

During a meeting for local business owners Thursday afternoon, event organizers for the Carolina Country Music Festival announced parking prices. Parking for the event will be in the old Myrtle Square Mall parking lot off of Kings Highway.

Parking, per person, not per car, will be $50 - a price many people say offends them.

"I thought it was a great event. I thought, oh finally, something fun to do down here, and then they throw this in your face a week before the event, it's not right," Sharon Smith said. Smith, along with many other locals going to the event, say they didn't know about this parking fee until Thursday.

"Fifty dollars per person is absolutely excessive. Fifty dollars per car, is understandable. Per person, is very excessive," Jordan Dietrich said.

Event coordinators say the $50 will be for the entire three-day event, boiling down to about $16 per day, and there will be a shuttle from the parking lot to the event.

"I think it's a good gesture, but… if you're willing to pay the $50, which I'm not…" Brian Wightman added.

"I think if you have your wrist bands or your ticket stub or however they are doing it, they should shuttle them down here for free," Smith said.

Now that they know about the additional cost to park, some are starting to plan around it.

"That was my idea, drop me off on the boulevard, you go park, and I'll give you twenty five bucks for the $50," Smith said.

"Well one of my buddies lives nearby, so we'll probably just walk here," Wightman explained.

Event coordinators feel the $50 per person price is reasonable, and it will pay for the costs associated with this parking lot: lighting, staffing, bathrooms, and paying for the shuttles to run 13 hours a day.
