FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – The Department of Natural Resources is giving you the chance to learn boating skills and water safety, without having to go near the water.

DNR is offering four virtual hands-on boating safety classes in July, featuring a new Boating Skills Virtual Trainer.

“Our Virtual Boating Trainer is a unique educational tool that allows the operator to maneuver a Pioneer boat in a virtual mode where there are no other boats, no water and no risks,” a news release from DNR states. “The virtual trainer gives the operator a life-like experience for learning first-hand what it is like to captain a boat and is a valuable addition to DNR's boating safety courses.”

Steering, throttle, and other controls work just like on a real boat, and the trainer can adjust everything from the wind, to the time of day. Students can also learn and practice boating maneuvers like docking, mooring, and pivot turns.

In addition to classes in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville, one class is being held locally on July 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the DNR Office in Florence at 295 S. Evander Drive.
