GEORGETOWN, SC (WMBF) - The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office is providing a drug drop box for the residents of Georgetown County to safely dispose of unwanted medications.

You can bring your unwanted pills or patches to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office located at 430 N. Fraser Street in the city of Georgetown Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Liquids, needles (sharps), thermometers and inhalers will not be accepted. Please call (843)-546-5102 for additional information.

CVS Pharmacy and The Partnership at Drugfree.org are uniting to form these donation programs for law enforcement agencies to apply for a drug collection unit for their communities, according to a news release from the GCSO.

Proper disposal of potentially dangerous, unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs is a public health and public safety issue, the release states.

According to the GCSO, the prescription drug abuse rates in the U.S. are extremely high and the majority of the abused drugs are acquired through the home medicine cabinets of friends and family members. Throwing unused medicines away or flushing them down the toilet is no longer the recommended method for medication disposal.
