Horry, Florence Counties among SC areas with decreased unemployment rates

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The number of people working in South Carolina continues to increase, and a major employment record was broken in April.

According to a release from the Department of Employment and Workforce, the number of South Carolinians working surpassed 2.1 million in April. The number increased to 8,106 since March. “The positive economy in South Carolina is drawing more and more people into the workforce as evidenced by this month's record breaking number of citizens who are employed. In the last month, nearly 10,000 South Carolinians entered the labor force showing that our state is optimistic about job opportunities,” said DEW Executive Director, Cheryl M. Stanton.

Statewide, more people worked trade, transportation and utilities occupations in April 2015.

Though the state's employment numbers increased, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 6.7 percent. Officials say the estimated number of unemployed people was 151,528 which increased to 1,760 people since March.

Local areas in SC including Horry and Florence County saw drops in unemployment rates in April. Horry County's rate decreased from 7.7 percent to 6.9 percent in just one month. Florence County's unemployment rate dropped from 7 percent in March to 6.9 percent in April.
