Bikefest arrests, accidents drop in 2015 in North Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Arrests, tickets, warnings, and accidents were significantly down over Memorial Day Weekend in North Myrtle Beach this year, compared to the same period in 2014.

Preliminary statistics show that there were only 47 arrests in North Myrtle Beach over Memorial Day Weekend 2015, which ran from May 21 to 25, compared to 105 arrests in 2014. In 2013, there were 70 arrests between May 23 and May 27, and the year before that, there were 39.

Both traffic accidents and motorcycle accidents were also lower this year: 22 traffic accidents in 2015 versus 44 in 2014, and eight motorcycle accidents in 2015, 10 less than the previous year.

The City of North Myrtle Beach also released statistics for Harley Week, which took place from May 10 to May 16. There were 48 total arrests in 2015, which is 5 fewer than the number of arrests during Harley Week in 2014. This year, there were 14 traffic accidents during Harley week, and just one involving a motorcycle. Last year, there were 23 accidents, and three involved motorcycles.

Overall, total calls for service to the City of North Myrtle Beach dropped in 2015 for both motorcycle events: from 908 to 865 for Harley Week, and 1437 in 2014 to 1043 this year during Memorial day Weekend.

The statistics released by the city on Tuesday are preliminary, and the final data is expected to be released by Friday, according to city officials.

     One person was killed in a motorcycle accident in Lake City Saturday night, according to Coroner Keith von Lutcken. The accident happened around 7:40 pm on South Morris Street and Dogwood Lane. The victim, identified as Victor McKenzie of Lake City, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Florence County Coroner’s Office is still investigating this incident.

     A female was hit by a car on Highway 544 Saturday night, according to Lt. Selena Small with the Conway Police Department. Small said the female was hit around 10:45 pm near the 700 block of Highway 544. The victim was taken to the hospital and was admitted for her injuries. The accident is still under investigation, check back with WMBF News for more information.
