DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Firefighters responded to a fire at a lumber mill in on Highway 52 Monday morning, according to officials.

The call for a fire at Canfor Lumber, located just south of the City of Darlington, came in at about 6:35 a.m. Monday, according to Chief Thomas Spivey with Palmetto Rural Fire Department. The call came in after a few plant workers came in Monday morning and found it.

The fire was extinguished, and the firefighters were cleared from the scene by 10:15 a.m., Chief Spivey said. The fire itself was in a raised office area in the saw building.

There were no injuries, and all the firefighters are okay.

Chief Spivey said they suspect that the fire may have been caused by a spark from some welding that was done over the weekend, which caused the fire to smolder and grow over the weekend. They are not completely sure this was the cause.

Palmetto Rural Fire crews had assistance from the City of Darlington Fire, Darlington County Fire, and the City of Hartsville Fire crews.
