Avoid getting caught in Memorial Day traffic

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - If you're planning to hit the road later Monday, prepare yourself for Memorial Day traffic.

And plenty of that traffic will be from visitors leaving hotels. Matt Klugman with Vacation Myrtle Beach says this weekend was busy, as is every Memorial Day Weekend. He says there was a short rush of people leaving town Sunday. But from experience, the holiday Monday is the biggest day for people leaving the beach.

For most hotels in the area, checkout time is between 11:00 a.m. and noon, so Klugman expects traffic to pick up between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. and carry on through the early afternoon.

He's not worried about traffic near the hotels, but you'll really feel the impact when you hit Highway 501, so try to avoid it at all possible through this afternoon.

“The only thing that I would suggest to people is just to plan accordingly and use Bypass 17, use Highway 31. If you're up on the north end use 22, those roads probably won't be quite as busy as 501,” says Klugman.

SCDOT has a useful tool called "Reach the Beach" that can help you through the holiday traffic, or anytime of the year. The map will show you how long it will take to get to and from the beach on major highways.

AAA expects more than 475,000 South Carolinians to take a road trip this weekend. That the highest number in a decade, which means there will be many people coming back to the beach as well.
