GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Crews responded to reports of a possible body floating near Eutaw Road in north Litchfield, but after searching for hours, a body was not found.

According to Chief Doug Eggiman with Midway Fire Rescue, crews searched for over two hours and nothing was found. Officials say when the call initially came in a beach patrol member just happened to be on the beach, and the rescue swimmer was the first resource to be deployed. Midway Fire Rescue also deployed two jet skis, the US Coast Guard sent a helicopter, and the Department of Natural Resources sent a boat, officials say.

Nothing indicated that someone was missing in the water, according to officials. There weren't any unoccupied beach blankets, towels, empty surfboards or reported missing people.

Eggiman said there are sea turtles, and stingrays in the water and the surfer may have mistaken one of them for a body.

According to Chief Eggiman, the call came in around 12:45 p.m. A surfer called after seeing what he believed to be a body floating, while he was surfing. Officials say the US Coast Guard and the Department of Natural Resources responded to the incident as well.

Chief Eggiman stated there were no reports of anyone missing from the beach area. This call is being taken seriously and all search efforts will be executed because even though no one was reported missing, if someone is out there, it is someone's loved one, according to Chief Eggiman.
