First night of Bikefest Traffic Loop slows downtown traffic

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Traffic was slow-moving during the first night of the Bikefest Traffic Loop Friday, especially in downtown Myrtle Beach, but was calm by Saturday morning, after the four-hour enforcement of the loop ended.

Many times from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., the lights would be green, but all drivers were seeing was red.

“What I'm seeing is safety, but at the same time it's more confusing than anything,” said Shedrick Caroll, a biker from Aiken.

Officers lined the road in an effort to ease any confusion, and reporter Jenna DeAngelis was driving the loop to see the traffic first-hand. Many bikers and drivers she spoke to were unhappy about the loop, barricades and traffic patterns, because they feel its creating a bit of confusion.

"Like right here, you see people making u-turns all over the place or just finding different ways to get to different places,” said Ron Everett, from Kansas City. The goals behind the loop include safety and traffic flow, but after sitting at a standstill, bikers like Everett feel it's not fulfilling its purpose.

One return biker that DeAngelis spoke to, said his solution is traveling on foot. He understands this is the first year with these traffic patterns, and is hoping it will be different come next year.

“That's the good thing about it that, they're trying to put in the effort,” Caroll said. “I like that, but I'm not agreeing with the approach that they took, so maybe that we can come up with a better solution.”

Enforcement begins again at 10 p.m., and the recommendation is to avoid the loop, especially near 29th Avenue North and Kings Highway – that's where drivers found a lot of congestion. Also keep in mind that there is a lane shut down on Ocean Boulevard during the day, and the traffic chute will still be in place on Kings Highway in Atlantic Beach.

It's also a good idea to keep your car off Ocean Boulevard while the traffic loop is in effect. If you need to drive overnight Saturday, your best bet is to use the bypass.
