GSMC: operating with additional staff, security

. - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Hotels, streets and beaches are filling up with bikers and visitors this weekend, and another place seeing a lot more traffic is your local hospital.

Grand Strand Medical Center is closely monitoring the number of patients, with plans in place to care for each person.

The Horry County Emergency Operation Center notes local hospitals do have ER beds available but are operating near capacity.

GSMC is in constant contact with the EOC along with police and emergency responders.

Those emergency responders suggest you consider going to Urgent Care facilities this weekend for non-emergencies to cut down on your wait time and medical treatment.

Doctors Care said they are operating as normal this weekend and are available for the public.

The EOC also reports that the fire rescue command center is open and experiencing a high volume of emergency medical calls.

In addition to patient plans, GSMC has a traffic plan in place. The entrance to the ER from Hwy 17 Bypass is reserved for emergencies only, the hospital asks all visitors to enter through the entrance on 82nd Parkway.

The hospital is running at full throttle to care for trauma patients, with more cases this year compared to last year. More than 250 trauma cases have entered the hospital since May 1, with 47 of them being motorcycle-related.

Leading into this weekend, the hospital tells WMBF News it is operating with additional staff and security to help with the higher volume of patients it may receive, with even more staff members on call.

As usual, the hospital has security at each door and you will need to show an ID to check into the building.
