DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Darlington County Sheriff's Office deputies are searching for a “sexual predator.” A composite sketch of the suspect wanted was released Friday.

The man has been described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall weighing around 200 lbs with a bald head and no facial hair. Deputies said he was wearing black long cargo shorts, red shirt with black and white stripe, and black sneakers.

"The unfortunate thing is that someone who does this type of crime is very likely to repeat, do the same type of crime somewhere else, so we want to make sure we get them off the street," Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd said.

In a news release issued by the sheriff's office:

On May 20, 2015 around 6:30 p.m. the Darlington County Sheriff's Office responded to Bo Bo Newsome Hwy/Hwy151 between Shaw Dr. and Fourteenth St. in the Hartsville area of Darlington County where a victim, whom is a minor, was sexually assaulted. The suspect was driving what appears to be an older model Trail Blazer light grey in color. The vehicle has damage to the rear above the tire on the driver side. We have reason to believe this could be the act of a sexual predator.

Sheriff Byrd said a girl was walking along Highway 151 to an evening event at Hartsville Middle School when the man drove past her. She saw him turn around and drive up to her again, pulling over and stopping to start a conversation with her. The girl didn't know the man, became suspicious and started walking away. Sheriff Byrd said there was a struggle between the two next to the highway.

"Hopeful that somebody may have seen that or that somebody may have seen this guy or this vehicle around the same time," he said.

He said the man took the girl behind Fleur De Lis Antiques and Collectibles Mall where she said he sexually assaulted her. The man drove away and the girl walked back home where she was then taken to the hospital and the sheriff's office was called. She has no physical injuries, Sheriff Byrd said.

He said this seems like a crime of opportunity because the girl didn't know the man. He also said this is the first time he's seen this kind of random sexual assault in the county since he's been sheriff.

Fleur De Lis was closed at the time of the incident, but the business does have security cameras.

SLED is assisting with the investigation. Sheriff Byrd said investigators are looking through the surveillance footage, but it is grainy and it's difficult for them to get a clear picture of the suspect or vehicle.

Sheriff Byrd said investigators don't know where the man is from or where he is now.

"One of our big concerns is that this may have been someone going to the beach and they're there now and if they assaulted someone in our jurisdiction, they may be on their way down there right now to do the same thing," he said. "If it's someone local, certainly we want to find them before the commit the same kind of crime here again."

If anyone has any information, please contact the Darlington County Sheriff's Office at 843-398-4501 or 843-398-4920.

Darlington County School District, Fleur de Lis and other area businesses declined to comment on the incident.
