Ocean Boulevard businesses preparing for Bikefest

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Some businesses on Ocean Boulevard have their safety plans down heading into the Memorial Day Weekend, while others are still learning.

"It will be a good way to gauge where we're at and what kinds of volumes we can handle," said Daniel Becker said Executive Chef at ART Burger and Sushi Bar. This weekend, the restaurant will experience their first major city event, because it's their first summer on the boulevard. Becker says aside from stocking up, they will be treating it like a normal weekend.

"It's going to be one of those things where if issues arise, we will handle them as they happen," Becker explained.

This year marks the 8th Avenue Tiki Bar's fourth Bikefest, and Manager Gil Reibenbach feels it's all about being proactive.

"Over-prepare yourself, because you never know what's going to happen," Reibenbach said. The Tiki Bar hires security through the weekend, from "usually five to seven at night, and two to three in the morning," Reibenbach explained.

This year,  Reibenbach says they will be bringing in an armed officer. "So if something does happen, he has a direct line for the police to make sure everything happens smoothly," he added. He says this is because his main concern is keeping his employees safe.

Sharky's on Ocean Boulevard says they too have a security plan. They are hiring 10 security officers, five more than last year, not because they had problems last year, but because they want to be prepared for the worst.

As for the newer businesses to the boulevard, Reibenbach has advice going into the weekend: "Your weekend is the same, it's just that there are so many in one spot, so it's just an overflow, and sometimes seems overwhelming, but if you're prepared and you're staffed right and your for all sides, the bar, kitchen, food, it should be, it should be easy," he said.

Many businesses can agree they have to be prepared for the volume of people that will soon fill Ocean Boulevard.

ART will be using what they learn and applying it to the rest of their busy summer weekends.
