Multi-vehicle crash closes Highway 17 Bypass: now given the all clear

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A multiple-vehicle crash closed Highway 17 Bypass for hours on Wednesday, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The accident happened in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 Bypass near Harrelson Boulevard at around 3:30 p.m.

Witnesses said traffic was stacked in southbound lanes.

At 4:30 p.m., the Myrtle Beach Police Department issued the following message:

***ROAD CLOSURE*** All south bound traffic on Bypass 17 is being diverted at Harrelson Blvd due to an accident. Please consider an alternate route and avoid this area.

Redaction: A fatality was previously reported in the crash. Horry County Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed the accident was not deadly. However, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital for serious injuries. 

The accident has since been given the all clear.

    An Horry County firefighter living in Conway was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexual battery with a student, according to jail records and other sources. Matthew James Oswald, 31, from Conway, was arrested by Horry County police at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday and charged with sexual battery with a student. As of Thursday morning, he remained incarcerated at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
