Memorial Day events scattered along Grand Strand, Pee Dee

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - With motorcycles, barricades, surveillance cameras, backup police and emergency crews, it's easy to lose the meaning of this holiday weekend.

“In all the local communities, if you check your calendars, there are parades and services and picnics and other things to do than hide from bikers,” says Sheila Walberg-O'Neil, the owner of 3rd Avenue Home.

Before you decide to hunker down for the whole weekend and hide away, there are some Memorial Day events you can plan for now. There will be plenty of shopping and deals to snag over the holiday as well. But many small businesses are choosing to close out of respect.

“The Memorial Day weekend, the parade for instance, they moved that up a whole week just to work around the biker weekend and the biker fest. So I think a lot of the veterans are forgotten. You know, people just sort of lose everything in Memorial Day anymore. And that needs to be brought out,” says Ron Pougnaud, the owner of Forgotten Times Antiques in downtown Conway.

Memorial Day events are scattered all along the Grand Strand and in the Pee Dee.
