Parent claims porn found on refurbished phone

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - It's a disturbing find; a customer claims he discovered porn on a cellphone meant for a teenager. It's a hidden danger on refurbished phones you may not even be aware exists.

The problem started about a month ago when Frank Shuman bought a refurbished phone online from AT&T. It was meant to be a gift for his girlfriend's 15-year-old son.

“When I first got it home, everything seemed fine with it,” said Frank Shuman about the refurbished Nokia Windows Phone.

Then, “videos popped up and it looks like….like child porn,” he added.

X-rated video after video, naked photo after photo, sometimes showing girls who appear to be young children, appeared on the Nokia phone.

“I was told ‘if you get caught with it, you could be arrested because its possession of child porn,'” said Shuman.

He wants AT&T and the police to track down the phone's previous owner, worried about what else that person could be doing.

“There is a folder in there that is so disgusting it brought tears to my eyes…it was horrible,” expressed Shuman.

After multiple calls to the phone company, Shuman said he wasn't getting anywhere.

“I have talked to AT&T for hours, several different times and they want to charge me $169 plus tax to replace the phone,” claimed Shuman.

WMBF News reached out to the company and was told it is now investigating Shuman's claims, adding that AT&T will send him a new phone at the company's expense.

In the meantime, Frank Shuman is unable to get rid of the sexually explicit images. He believes the phone is synced to an Xbox account, which is protected by a password.

Shuman said he was told by the phone company that sometimes the process to reset a refurbished phone does not clear everything completely from the device.
