Coroner identifies moped rider killed in multi-vehicle accident on Hwy 701

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A moped rider was killed Monday night on an Horry County road after colliding with a vehicle.

Horry County Coroner, Darris Fowler identified the victim as 37-year-old James Jarrett of Conway. According to Fowler, Jarrett's cause of death was "mass multi trauma," and officials say he died on the scene of the crash. The coroner says the victim was not wearing a helmet.

First responders were called to the crash on Highway 701 near Bruce Gerald's Convenience Store in Loris.

According to Highway Patrol, the accident happened at around 8:37 p.m. Monday. The crash involved four vehicles: a 2007 Chevy SUV, a 2001 Dodge, and 1993 Lexus and a moped. South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said the driver of a moped crossed the center line and hit an SUV head on. 

According to the SCHP: The 67-year-old driver of the Chevy SUV was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the 2001 Dodge was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the Lexus was not injured.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating this accident.
