Sport bike accident on Kings Highway leaves one dead

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Shortly after midnight on Monday morning, two sport bike motorcycles were involved in a deadly crash.

The crash took place at 3101 South Kings highway, near the Midway Par 3 Golf Course, at about 12:16 a.m. Monday.

According to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard, one of the drivers 19 year old Stephen Agnew Jr. from Farmville, VA died on the scene from his injuries. She said he was not wearing a helmet.

There is no word yet on the condition of the other driver.

The a section of the northbound lanes of Kings Highway and Farrow Parkway were closed to traffic early Monday morning.

Corporal Kerns with the Myrtle Beach Police Department said it doesn't appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

This was the first fatal motorcycle accident so far for the rally season in Horry County. However, there have been more than 20 motorcycle accidents with injuries this month, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. That includes injuries from anyone involved in the accident, not solely motorcyclists.

Grand Strand Medical Center did see more trauma patients during the Spring Rally than during previous years for reasons ranging from motorcycle and car accidents to falls and assaults.

"We do have a full hospital," said Dr. Antonio Pepe, trauma medical director for Grand Strand Medical Center. "The majority of them are trauma patients and our traumatic or surgical ICU is actually full at this point."

Dr. Pepe does often see patients after motorcycle accidents, which he said can cause serious brain and head injuries, especially when someone isn't wearing a helmet.

"Be sure to take your memories home with you so be safe this coming weekend," he said.
