COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Surfside Beach Rep. Nelson Hardwick unexpectedly resigned as an Horry County lawmaker Tuesday.

Rep. Hardwick decided to step down following an investigation into an inappropriate conduct complaint filed against him investigated by House Speaker Jay Lucas.

A source in the State House has confirmed that a female staffer filed a complaint against Rep. Hardwick a few weeks back- a written complaint was sent to House Speaker Jay Lucas.

Tuesday, the 63-year-old Republican's short resignation letter said he was quitting because he wanted to focus on his health.

Hardwick was chairman of House's agriculture and natural resources committee for two terms before moving to the Ways and Means Committee in 2015.

Here's a copy of the resignation letter submitted by Hardwick on Tuesday, May 12:

Dear Mr. Speaker,

It is with a heavy heart that I hereby submit this letter of resignation from my seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives effective 5:00 p.m., May 12, 2015. For personal reasons, I feel as though I should step away from life in public service to take some time to focus on my health.

Serving in the South Carolina House has been one of the single greatest highlights of my life. It has been an honor and privilege to represent the people of Horry County for the past ten years.
