NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - An area of 6th Avenue South is temporarily closed to swimming due to a sewage spill.

The following is a press release sent from the City of North Myrtle Beach:

North Myrtle Beach, SC – May 11, 2015 – The City of North Myrtle Beach has closed a 500 foot wide section of beach to swimming at 6th Avenue South. The closure was required after a sewer pipe break was discovered this morning. Fortunately, the pipe is connected to a small pump station and the break only allowed between 300 and 400 gallons of sewage into the water before the break was discovered and fixed.

Coastal Carolina University is taking water samples in the affected area today and SC DHEC will take follow up samples tomorrow.
