Bikefest Memorial DayTraffic loop impacts Pelicans ball games

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have to adjust game schedules during Bikefest Memorial Day weekend because of the planned 23-mile-traffic loop.

The Pelicans made the decision to move game times to earlier in the day all weekend, rather than have people leaving the ball park deal with what could be hours of back-ups caused by the traffic loop.

Pelican's GM Andy Milovich said Memorial Day weekend is a very strong attendance time. Locals and a huge percentage of out-of-towners come to the park to watch the team play ball.

The pelicans front officer made the decision not to let all those fans get caught up in the loop and get in traffic on the way home.

Especially out-of-towners who may be relying on a GPS to get around, which wouldn't correctly update with the loop in place.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday the games will start at 6 p.m., rather than 7 p.m.

That way by the time the game is done, people linger or watch fireworks and get on their way, it will still be before the 10 p.m. loop goes into effect.

It's not a huge change, but it shows how the traffic loop is affecting businesses as the weekend draws closer.

"The City of Myrtle Beach has been really proactive in terms of creating maps and descriptions of what's taking place and why, and so forth," said Milovich. "And so we'll be distributing information like that at the gates when the fans come into the ball park. And as well on our website via our newsletter prior to the game. Just so that people coming know well in advance what to expect."

Milovich said the front office actually talked with Myrtle Beach police about the decision and police support it, because it will keep fewer people on the roads, which in turn will result in fewer problems and less traffic.
