MBPD: Accused purse-snatcher tries to escape police custody twice, runs into moving car

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A man accused of purse-snatching is behind bars - despite trying to escape police custody two times, and eventually running into a moving vehicle while fleeing.

Myrtle Beach Police said it all started when 33-year-old Bobby Alewine allegedly went into a Chinese restaurant in Myrtle Beach on Sunday. He is accused of following an elderly woman out of the restaurant where he and an accomplice tried to steal her purse, eventually knocking her to the ground and dragging her.

Police arrested Alewine on Monday, and on Wednesday evening, police said he was at Grand Strand Medical Center receiving treatment for an undisclosed reason.

Around 8:00 p.m. Thursday, police said he went into a restroom, shackled and with a guard outside, and tried to escape. Officers found the vent to the HVAC system had been pulled down, exposing the airway tunnel above.

Alewine was unsuccessful in his attempt, police took him back into custody and are seeking a warrant for attempted escape.

Half an hour later, at 8:30 p.m., police said Alewine was discharged from the hospital. and officers were taking him back to the Myrtle Beach jail. While officers were walking him to the patrol car, Alewine broke free and tried to run away again. But he ran into a moving car, fell down and officers were able to again detain him. Officers are seeking a second warrant for attempted escape.

He was treated again at the hospital after the incident, before officers successfully returned him to the Myrtle Beach jail.
