Timmonsville adds more resources to police department

TIMMONSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - One more officer is being added to the town's force just one year after it was reinstated after being closed for more than two years.

“One of the things I requested was another officer and I got the other officers a pay raise,” said Gregory Palmer, Timmonsville's Police Chief.

Palmer said the force is showing a lot of positive changes.

Last week, Timmonsville Town Council approved more funding for the department.

Palmer said he is giving raises to the town's current officers and hiring one more full-time position, compared to this time last year when the department consisted only of Chief Gregory Palmer.

Before last May, council members had decided to dissolve the department because the town said it no longer had the revenue to keep the department around.

During the gap over town police coverage, some of the department's vehicles were damaged by vandals, WMBF News asked the chief if there is enough resources to go with all the positive growth the department is seeing.

“We are still trying to secure resources. We submitted a request to the county council to give us some assistance,” Palmer said.

The chief also added the department has applied for a grant to help replace some of those resources.

Overall, Chief Palmer said this past year, has been good for the department and the community has taken kindly to having police back in its neighborhoods again.

“We're excited about the things that are happening. Looking at the past and seeing how things were compared to how things are now….much much better,” Palmer said.

Right now, the police department is hiring a full-time officer.

The chief said he would like to get someone in and working as soon as possible.
