Former AVX plant demo site being developed into state-of-the-art Pool Builders Supply

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A company is expanding to Myrtle Beach, with plans to build a state-of-the-art pool part distribution center right downtown - redeveloping a demolition site many describe as an eyesore.

Pool Builders Supply is expanding and building a more than 42,000 square foot plant where the former AVX plant was torn down in 2012. And 15 inside sales staff jobs will come with it.

You probably recognize the concrete slab, it's an eyesore on the side of Highway 501 heading away from the beach right before Seaboard Street.

Pool Builders Supply already has a location in Longs that services North Myrtle Beach up the coast to North Carolina. It's expanding to Myrtle Beach because there is tremendous opportunity to grow the business from here down the South Carolina coast.

It supplies pool equipment and chemicals to service companies, pool builders and retail stores. So you can't walk in and buy from the store off the street, but your builder, repairman or your pool store can.

Since AVX was torn down, the site has become overgrown.

People who live in the area and work beside the now-empty space are thrilled something is finally moving in. "It's gotta be better off if there was something developed in there,” said Jeff Szirmae, who works next to the empty lot . “You hate to see empty properties. It makes Myrtle Beach look bad, I think. When they build that up and it'll be brand new, and it'll be a pretty building, it'll be a good thing. We could use some business coming in and revitalizing the area."

The plans are for the facility to be built by late 2015. The first step in that process is getting approval from Myrtle Beach's Community Appearance Board. Pool Builders Supply will seek that approval at Thursday's CAB meeting.
