Community holding peace rally after 14-year-old shot and killed

LONGS, SC (WMBF) – A peace rally is being organized in the Popular community of Horry County after the latest shooting death in recent months: a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the face Friday.

The Empowerment Peace Rally will be held on Saturday, May 9 from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. by the Popular and Longs communities of Horry County.

“The Popular and Longs communities are shocked and saddened by the tragic and senseless violence that continues to plague our area,” states Rev. Wallace Evans, Jr., an organizer for the event. “In light of the gun violence, we will come together in PEACEFUL solidarity in honor of the victims and their families and to mourn the loss of many young men in recent months.”

The march will begin at 3:45 p.m. from the Chesterfield Missionary Baptist Church, located at 8591 Highway 90 in Longs. Horry County Police Chief Saundra Rhodes and State Senator Greg Hembree are expected to address the crowd, along with the families who have lost loved ones to violence.
