SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Family and friends of a teen shot down in Longs over the weekend are concerned about the crime rate in Longs.

Taizaun Dewitt, 14, was killed Friday night after a bullet struck him in the face.

His mother, Kissie Melvin, says Taizaun lived with his father in that area of Longs and Taizaun was often at his friends house on Collins Circle.

All Melvin knows about the night of the shooting, is that another teen who lived in the home was getting dropped off from work, when that teen found Taizaun collapsed in the drive way, bleeding.

Man wanted for questioning in shooting death of 14-year-old Longs boy

While no arrests have been made, police are searching for Rodrez Daquell Stanley, 21, of Longs, according to officials. Stanley is wanted for questioning, police said.

Taizaun's mother says she does not recognize Stanley's name, but does not doubt her son may have known him.

Melvin says Taizaun was a very sociable, and popular young man, and it wasn't unusual for him to not only be hanging out with children his own age, but also some much older.

As she prepares for Taizaun's services, Melvin is trying to stay strong, but also starting to realize her son is gone.

"Just the realization that.. I'll never see his name come up on my phone, and I pick up the phone and he says, 'Ma!'" Melvin said.

On Monday afternoon, Kissie Melvin did what no mother should ever have to do.

She looked over her son's body and saw the wound on his face.

However, what keeps her going, is her son's character.

She says at just 14 years old, Taizaun had no problem being himself.

"...and that's the thing that everybody loved about him, just Taizaun being Taizaun, being that clown, making everybody laugh, lord have mercy, he could really, really make you laugh," Melvin laughed.

Behind the laughs, she says many didn't know Taizaun was having a hard time coping with the violence that recently took the lives of two of his good friends.

"He was so sad, he couldn't understand, why these things were happening, and they were really troubling to him, and made him feel like maybe it could happen to him as well," Melvin explained.

His fear and confusion, was Melvin's concern.

"I know just Wednesday night, I know I lectured him about an hour, and I said baby, be careful because Mama's got a feeling something's going to happen," Melvin recalled.

Even though that fear did come true, Melvin knows she has to be strong for her two other children, especially Taizaun's younger brother.

"I know the days ahead he's going to be asking, where's my brother? Or he's going to want to see his brother, and that's the part, where I am going to run out of words to say, because I am not going to know what to say, How do you explain that, you know, to a four year old?" Melvin asked.

Melvin says Taizaun also has an older brother that also lived with his father. She says his father and older brother are also devastated by Taizaun's death.

Melvin says it's hard enough realizing Taizaun is gone, and she wants who police say is a person of interest, 21 year old Rodrez Daquell Stanley or anyone else with information to come forward and give the family peace.

"At the end of the day all you want is the truth, I want to know what happened to Taizaun. what happened to my child, that's what I want to know," Melvin pleaded.

If you have any information, call 915-TIPS. Your tip will be anonymous.

Melvin says she finds strength knowing her son is in heaven, and he doesn't have to worry anymore.

She hopes his death with prompt other teens to be more careful and turn to god for guidance.

A visitation will be held for the 14 year old Tuesday afternoon, from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Latimers funeral home in Conway.

Followed by his funeral on Wednesday, at Chesterfield Missionary Baptist Church in Longs, at 2 p.m.
