K9 handler, SWAT team member named Myrtle Beach Officer of the Year

Senior Patrolman Chris Smith earned the coveted title of Myrtle Beach Police Officer of the Year award. Senior Patrolman Chris Smith earned the coveted title of Myrtle Beach Police Officer of the Year award.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF ) - A canine handler for the Myrtle Beach Police Department Street Crimes Unit was named officer of the year.

The Myrtle Beach Rotary Club awarded Senior Patrolman Chris Smith the title. Smith is also a member of the SWAT team.

"Next step is to keep working hard, I'm part of the canine unit and part of the plan is to expand the canine unit, so im going to keep on doing what i can to keep the community safe," Smith said.

He trains tirelessly with his canine partner, Ali, and together they made almost a perfect score of 98 out of 100 on the latest re-certification test.

This is the 49th year the club has presented this award.

Seven officers were up for the title.
