LAKE CITY, SC (WMBF) – The elusive Bill Murray made a surprise appearance at the Artfields art competition in Lake City over the weekend.

The Legendary star of Caddyshack and Ghostbusters can be seen in a handful of photos from Lake City floating around social media. Greg Moore, president of the Greater Lake City Chamber of Commerce, was one of those lucky enough to get one of those photos.

“It was absolutely fantastic,” Moore said. “I had heard that he was walking around town…he was extremely gracious.”

Moore said he jumped at the chance to get a photo with the star, and talked briefly with Murray.

“I told him the first movie I've seen was Stripes,” Moore said. “He laughed at that.”

“To meet someone of that celebrity and that magnitude that all of us have personal relationship based off his work, was really cool to me,” Moore added. “I felt like I already knew him because I spend so much time watching him.”

When Moore posted the photo to his Facebook page, a friend accused him of photoshopping the picture, but several other photos captured Murray about town.

Moore said Murray came out and enjoyed the festival, went around town, toured the artwork, did some shopping, and was out on the village green for the presentation of the Artfields winners.

“We had a lot of people in town for Artfields,” Moore said, although admittedly none as recognizable as the 64-year-old comedy star. “It's a phenomenon, a community movement.”

Lake City, with a population of about 6,500, had about 300 people volunteering for the nine-day event, in which over $100,000 was cash prizes is awarded to artists from around the region.

Will Bill return to Artfields in 2016?

“We'd love to have him back,” Moore said. “In Artfields 2016, there will be more celebrities – this thing has taken on a life of itself.”
