Take confidential documents to shred event to avoid identity theft

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Sheriff's Office hosted a shred event to urge you to drop off documents that could leave your identity vulnerable to thieves.

Criminals can dig through your trash, locating and stealing your valuable and confidential information.

The sheriff's office said the elderly are particularly vulnerable to these type of crimes since many don't use computers.

Investigators said they see cases of thieves rooting through garbage to steal personal information.

"I do think that some people will target, especially older adults who are not comfortable using computers. They won't pay their bills online, they still get bank statements in the mail, they still get credit card statements in the mail," said Sgt. Sherri Smith, Horry County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson.

So, if you've got boxes of mail or printouts with personal information that identity thieves would love to get their hands on, Sgt. Smith says keep it in a box and add to it throughout the year to bring it to a shred event like this one.
