Ways to save money despite higher parking rates

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – As of Friday, parking became a little more expensive in Myrtle Beach.  The new parking meter rates kicked in just ahead of the summer season, but you can still save some money if you know where to look.

Some businesses like Atlas Tap House came up with an idea to help cover the cost of parking for customers.

“We kind of started upping our purchase of quarters to keep people coming through the door and throwing quarters their way,” added co-owner Aaron Gifford.  “We just realized we needed to be more proactive in getting people down here making sure they knew as well that we were able to pay for parking."

Gifford said even though he may end up tossing a few bucks at the meters, it is worth it in the long run.  Atlas Tap House is just one of several businesses who have some sort of deal when it comes to helping customers park.

The new Art Burger Sushi Bar works with a parking lot across the street.  Locals can pay $5 to park and Art will give you a refund for parking on your tab.

Other restaurants up and down the beach run similar offers, but they may not be advertised.

Moving forward into this summer, some of those businesses may reevaluate how they handle parking because the city increased parking meter rates anywhere from 25 to 50 cents depending on where you park.

This is just the second time Myrtle Beach has raised parking meter rates.
