Grand Strand gears up for big sports weekend

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - In some instances, it's just a boxing match. In others, it's been billed as the "fight of the century." Saturday marks the long-awaited match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas but the bout is building a buzz back here on the Grand Strand as well.

"I'd love to see that fight,” said Mark Keep. “If we would not have come [to Myrtle Beach], we probably would've went to Vegas to watch that fight, it's going to be a great fight.”

A great fight with a great cost. With its $100 Pay Per View price tag, this match could break Mayweather's own record as the highest grossing pay-per-view event ever.

"I never [buy Pay per view fights] but this might be a fight that you might want to do that, it's going to be a great fight,” said Keep.

If throwing down that much money knocks you down for the count, there are some options with a few local sports bars showing the fight, but for a price.

"It's good for business,” said Andrea Nunziante, manager at Shuckers Raw Bar at Broadway at the Beach. “You want to be known as a sports bar that carries everything so you have to have these major events in order to be known as that place for everybody to come to."

Rather than host the fight and pass off costs to customers, some national chain restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings, have decided against screening the event. However, Shuckers has hosted several sporting events in the past and manager, Andrea Nunziante says this bout will be no different.

"We have reoccurring people that come back all the time just for these fights because they know we're going to be having them and we gain the sales from it,” said Nunziante, “so you gain it back in sales being such a huge fight and everybody wants to watch this fight."
