Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center to host fair

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (News Release) – Promising something for everyone, the Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center will hold a Family Fair on Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3101 Oak Street. All activities and refreshments are free and include music, games, information and giveaways. The purpose of the Family Fair is to familiarize the community with the variety of programs and services within the Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, including:

· Horry County Schools Adult Education

· Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand

· Head Start

· BabyNet / First Steps

· The Grand Strand Prosperity Center, a partnership of HCS Adult Education, Palmetto Goodwill, United Way of Horry County, and Horry County Literacy Council. Since opening in October 2013, The Prosperity Center has provided a one-stop, integrated system of services and trainings to help move individuals into financial stability.

Each of the organizations provides programs and services free of charge, including high school diploma and equivalency test completion, English as a Second Language, employment assistance, resume writing, one-on-one tutoring, financial literacy, early intervention for infants and toddlers, and more. “There are so many different organizations that could benefit someone or everyone in your family,” said Tricksome Stevens with the Prosperity Center, “And our neighbors in the community may not be aware of all the services so we are hoping to highlight these programs for them.”

In addition to the various programs housed in the Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center, other community organizations have been invited and will participate to share their individual missions and goals. According to Etta L. Greene Carter, Director of Horry County Schools Adult Education, “Our goal is to introduce our programs and services in their entirety so the community will know what is offered and how to take advantage of these opportunities. Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center is not only committed to assisting individuals but to strengthening families for a better future. We are conveniently located within the Myrtle Beach cluster of schools and look forward to welcoming all our neighbors.”

    One person has died after an accident on U.S. 17 South early Saturday morning. According to Jed Jones with South Carolina Highway Patrol, a pick-up truck was traveling on U.S. 17, when it ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned around 1:55 Saturday morning. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

     A house fire has temporarily shut down Myrtle Avenue in Pawley’s Island. Pawley’s Island Police confirm a house fire at 350 Myrtle Avenue, and say the road will be closed for a while. There is a house fire at 350 Myrtle Ave. Street will be closed for a while between the causeways.

    Conway Pastor Phillip Miles was arrested Thursday by TSA for carrying an unloaded pistol into Myrtle Beach International Airport. According to J. Reuben Long Detention Center’s website, Miles was charged with carrying weapons into restricted places and was released on $500.00 bond.
