How can I sign up to be a Myrtle Beach ambassador?

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Training begins Wednesday, May 13 for the Myrtle Beach Citizen Ambassadors program. This training will focus specifically on what ambassadors will need to know to better help the community during Memorial Day weekend.

The sole purpose of these ambassadors will be to educate and create a welcoming environment. These volunteers will not be there to do any actual policing. Wednesday's training will revolve around how to get on and off Ocean Boulevard, contact numbers for the police and fire departments, how to make a police report, and the traffic loop. This is information the ambassadors will be readily available with to help visitors.

"We want citizens who are a part of the ambassador program to interact with the crowd and provide basic information as far as the event itself or even simple information such as how do I get to my hotel or where's a good place to eat,” says Lt. Joey Crosby with the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Before the Memorial Day Weekend events kick off, these ambassadors will be assigned to specific shifts. And before their shifts start, volunteers will be briefed and sent to their specific areas. So they will not be wandering around alone.

Monika Newman is volunteering her time as an ambassador and will be attending Wednesday's training. She says she is not worried about this year's Bike Fest. Newman believes our police force has put a lot of preparation into making sure everyone from visitors, to volunteers, to police, to locals all stay safe.

Community ambassadors will also be used during the Country Carolina Music Fest. Specific training for those volunteering for that event will be in a couple weeks. Business watch meetings will also be held in a couple weeks for the businesses directly impacted by the music fest along Ocean Boulevard, 9th Avenue North, and 8th Avenue North.

Police leaders say there is no cap to the program. So if you would like to volunteer, you can call the citizen ambassador coordinator at 843-918-1976.

“We're generally asking if a citizen can volunteer several hours a day for each event,” says Lt. Crosby. “But again, we are willing to accept anybody in any capacity. We're seeking volunteers for the program.”
