Marlboro Park Hospital will close

MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - In two days, Marlboro Park will close its doors.

The Bennettsville community is concerned about the move of the local hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said the doors of the Marlboro Park hospital will be closed May 1.

People who live in this area will have to drive 20 minutes to get help during an emergency.

“That's sad for the community around here in Bennettsville. All of the surrounding counties have places…what's a community without a hospital?” asked Regina Brown who lives in Bennettsville.

And it's not just the people who live, work and play that are concerned about not having a hospital.

Other health care facilities also discussed how the impacts of the hospital closing.

The Senior Agape Center released this statement.

“I feel bad for the citizens of Marlboro County.   The closing of the hospital will have rippling effects on the community from the loss of healthcare services to the loss of those local jobs.   I'm certain that the remaining healthcare providers will step up to continue to support and serve the needs of the community as much as possible," Matt Staub, Regional President, Agape Senior

Shortly before the hospital announced its closure, staff were able to attend a job fair hosted by McLeod Regional and also SC Works.

The current owner of the hospital says it is closing the facility because it doesn't bring in enough money to keep it operational.

McLeod Regional signed a letter of intent for both Marlboro Park and Cheraw Memorial.

Right now, McLeod Regional says studies are being conducted to determine what services can be provided at this facility.

At this point, all patients that are currently in the hospital are being transported to Chesterfield Memorial Hospital.
